Derek Ichien joined the CALSTART team in January 2021 as a Project Manager on the Validation and Assessment team. His role involves supporting data collection, analysis, and communication on a range of innovative mobility projects, including fleet electrification, multimodal transportation solutions, and clean fueling infrastructure.
Previously, he served as a Senior Project Coordinator for the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure team at the Center for Sustainable Energy in San Diego. There, he conducted economic analyses to identify opportunities to replace fleet vehicles with zero-emissions alternatives, aided in the development of three regional electrification roadmaps, provided personalized technical assistance to potential EV charger site hosts, and helped EV charger manufacturers navigate the equipment eligibility process for the CALeVIP charger incentive program.
During his time in the sustainability and energy space, Derek has also worked to identify and implement cost-effective energy efficiency solutions for several public schools throughout Humboldt County, CA, and led GPS field audits and supported geospatial analysis on more than 20 LED streetlighting projects throughout New England and the West Coast.
Derek holds both an M.S. (Energy, Technology, and Policy) and a B.S. (Environmental Science, emphasis Energy and Climate) from Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA. His thesis examined the economic feasibility and local impacts of implementing an electric vehicle rental car pilot program within Kaua’i County, HI.
