Matthew Nelson serves as Senior Principal for Policy and Research at Edison Electric Institute, leading research and policy analysis that supports sound, evidence-based policymaking and helps strengthen the investment climate for the electric power sector. Key priorities include advancing policy and market certainty, lowering infrastructure financing costs, and encouraging investment in electrification.
Previously, as Director of Energy Policy at Walmart, Matt led the development and implementation of energy strategies with a strong focus on electric vehicles (EVs) and sustainability. Nelson played a key role in advancing Walmart’s investment in EV infrastructure and the broader transition to electrified transportation across the U.S.
Matt previously led Government Affairs for Electrify America. As the 5th employee, Matt served on the leadership team as the company launched and grew to become the largest public EV charging network in North America. In the public sector, Matt served in the Obama Administration as Chief of Staff in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). Earlier in his career, Matt served as U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein’s Senior Policy Advisor and staffed Congressman Tom Allen (D-ME) on the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee.
Matt earned a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School and a B.A. from Dartmouth College. He lives with his family in Northern Virginia.
