Light-Duty Vehicles

CALSTART’s Light-Duty Vehicles Initiative focuses on cutting emissions and pollution while working with its industry partners to accelerate the growth of the market for zero-emission vehicles and significantly greater vehicle efficiency overall. Concurrently, we are actively engaging partners and working to develop new mobility business models that will reduce congestion.

To drive change, the Light-Duty Vehicles Initiative currently focuses on the following four areas:

  • Securing incentives at the federal and state level to encourage the purchase of zero-emission vehicles.
  • Building out zero-emission infrastructure so that consumers and fleets can drive with security.
  • Supporting strong, but feasible vehicle standards that advance technology but also keep vehicles affordable and viable.
  • Identifying and supporting new mobility initiatives that can reduce the number of single-occupancy vehicle miles traveled in urban and suburban areas.

MARKET ACCELERATION

LEARN MORE

CALSTART is working strategically and collaboratively with public and private sector leaders and innovators to accelerate zero-emission light-duty vehicles and the infrastructure that powers them. Examples include:

  • Growing electric vehicle charging for the workers who power the American economy through the Department of Energyfunded Charge@Work program. Your workplace charging concierge, Charge@Work, engages workplaces, public officials, and community leaders to start workplace charging programs.
  • Developing and administering PowerForward, California’s equity-first, marketaccelerating, $25 million battery manufacturing block grant program.
  • Helping OEMs and fleets jumpstart domestic low-carbon steel and aluminum procurement while creating green jobs and reducing air pollution. Learn more on the official Race to Green Steel website and reach out to [email protected] with any questions.
  • Working with industry and policymakers on future capabilities at the confluence of electric vehicles, ride-sharing, and self-driving vehicles.

PUBLIC POLICY DEVELOPMENT

LEARN MORE

Public policy decisions can accelerate the deployment of clean transportation technology — or slam on the brakes. CALSTART supports feasible policies that advance technology while ensuring vehicles are affordable and viable. Examples include:

  • Working with members nationally to support strong but feasible federal standards limiting greenhouse gases and other harmful emissions from cars and light-duty trucks.
  • Conducting surveys of Tier 1 suppliers in the United States, strengthening the market for cleaner, more efficient internal-combustion-powered passenger vehicles, and working to expand the market for zero-emission cars.
  • Playing a leading role in identifying, maintaining, and administering state and federal financial incentives for consumers to purchase zero-emission vehicles.
  • Organizing broad industry support to help maintain the federal electric-vehicle tax credit.
  • Building consensus for standardization and other approaches to improve the EV charging user experience, which removes a critical barrier to faster EV adoption.
