Work History

Most recently, Liz spent 6 years as a technical editor at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, where she worked with researchers in analysis, community resilience programs, and international organizations on designing and integrating sustainability initiatives across the United States and the world. While at the lab, Liz collaborated with USAID, EERE, Tribal and indigenous communities, the Weatherization Assistance Program, and many others.

On the Communications Department side, Liz spearheaded the integration of developmental editing into the organization’s portfolio, and she provided editing support for basically any kind of documentation you could imagine, from technical reports to slide decks to community flyers. She also published a short story collection in 2019, Extinction Events, which won the Prairie Schooner Book Prize for Fiction and explores humanity’s relationship to the earth and to one another through the lens of extinction. She’s also published short stories in numerous prestigious literary journals and received fellowships and grants from organizations like the National Endowment for the Arts.

Work Approach

Liz believes that clear, engaging, and passionate communication is key to advancing the transition to renewable energy, and that crafting exciting and interesting documentation can help make clean transportation a cause people want to be involved in. Science writing, and writing about renewable energy, doesn’t have to be stuffy and boring. Her background in creative writing has given Liz the ability to approach each piece of writing on its own terms and tell compelling stories that enhance and grow CALSTART’s mission, one sentence at a time.
