In response to breaking news from the White House, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced awardees for its Clean Ports Program—which provides $3 billion to fund zero-emission port equipment and infrastructure as well as climate and air quality planning at U.S. ports through the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022—CALSTART’s Vice President Jasna Tomic issued the following media statement:

“Today, President Biden has announced $3B for zero-emission technology deployment and planning from EPA’s Clean Ports Program competition that will build a strong foundation for the port and freight sector to rapidly decarbonize operations in and around vulnerable communities.

“We applaud the EPA for moving swiftly to deploy these awards that will transform our freight sector and prioritize investments in infrastructure and people.

“Ports are a backbone of our economy; they also present opportunities to tackle air pollution at a major source. In turn, this transition creates clean jobs for workers and enhances air quality for already overburdened communities—all while significantly lowering carbon pollution that contributes to climate change.

“With today’s news, the U.S. is demonstrating its firm commitment to identifying viable pathways and implementation actions that advance the target of at least 30% zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicle sales by 2030, per the Biden Administration’s commitment to the CALSTART and the Government of the Netherlands co-led Global Memorandum of Understanding on Zero-Emission Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles. This action also puts into action the pivotal launch phase in the National Zero-Emission Freight Corridor Strategy.

“CALSTART is pleased to have supported submissions from several awardees across the nation and intends to fully support implementation from selected applicants.”
