The Electrification of School Buses
Assessing Technology, Market, and Manufacturing Readiness
While electric school buses (ESBs) currently represent just a small percentage of the 500,000 school buses in the United States, the $5 billion in funding provided by Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Clean School Bus Program is expected to greatly accelerate the pace at which ESBs will be deployed. An examination of the ESB market is urgently needed to help the market meet demand and prepare it for mass adoption of ESBs. This report investigates multiple aspects of the ESB market including technology readiness, market readiness, and manufacturing readiness. This report identifies several barriers to the ESB market and offers recommendations for how to address them, including establishing workforce development initiatives and an American EV component supply chain as well as funding the manufacturing of repowered ESBs and increasing standardization of ESBs.
